Our Purpose

Why CLEAR-Africa Exists

Protecting both lives and livelihoods through an African-led multi-country collaboration

The COVID-19 pandemic revealed a stark reality: pandemic response measures, while necessary for public health, can have devastating economic consequences. Across Africa, the lack of integrated tools meant that decision-makers often had to choose between saving lives and preserving livelihoods without sufficient data on the trade-offs.

Economic impacts were often excluded from epidemiological models, and conversely, health dynamics were missing from economic forecasts. There remains a significant skills gap in integrated "epi-econ" modelling across the continent.

"CLEAR-Africa addresses this gap by building capacity, developing frameworks, and creating tools that enable holistic, evidence-based decision-making during health emergencies."

Lives & Livelihoods

Developing frameworks that simultaneously assess health burdens and economic costs to inform balanced interventions.

African Leadership

A consortium led by African institutions, building local capacity and tailoring solutions to the continent's unique context.

Evidence to Policy

Translating complex modelling outputs into actionable policy briefs for decision-makers in five implementing countries.

Training

Capacity strengthening for the next generation of African researchers in integrated epi-econ modelling.

The Consortium

The Consortium

Southern, East, and West African collaboration with a vision to become a nexus of epidemic modelling for Africa. Led by African institutions and experts, our consortium brings together epidemiologists, disease modellers, macroeconomists, and health economists across five implementing countries.
